Duck Tails

So my sister (you know, the one who should pay me to be her personal seamstress) asked me to make some presents for a birthday party she's taking her girls to.  She wanted hooded towels with ducks, neither of which are my favorite.

Luckily for her, she found these really cute chick faces at Lynnie Pinnie.  The towels are for a boy/girl set of twins, so I got to stitch both the girly face and the boy face.

I used knits for the applique fabric and loved it.  They lay much nicer than the woven fabrics I've used on towels.  The only thing I didn't like was that I had to do a lot of resizing to get the designs to match.  The girl face is a lot smaller than the boy face, because of the flower.  I believe I used the boy 5x7 design at 82% and the girl 6x10 design at 110%, moving the flower so that it would fit in a 5x7 hoop.  The end result was that all the features they have in common are the same size (unlike in my pictures).

Those faces were so cute that I was happy to stitch them out, but I really got excited about the project when my sister sent me the link to a duck tail design.

I used the font "Fudge" from 8 Claws & a Paw

I resized the tail to 150%, crossing my fingers because that's more than I should have increased it (and it was from a site I had never purchased from before.)  I removed the fill stitches that were in the center of the tail design and just did the satin stitch, which I thought ended up looking pretty neat.  Then I added the names in 1-inch letters, at 120% I think. (Wouldn't you know it, I threw my notes away.  Man, I am off my game today!)  I put the tails & names on the back of the towel, a few inches up from the bottom.  I think they turned out so cute!

Fishing Towels

My kids have been sick, and I will probably be next, if my nose starting to run is any indication, ugh.  I love being a mommy, but I hate when my kids are sick; I am not a good nurse.  My husband is, but he has been under the weather too :(  We took it easy this weekend, so hopefully everyone will be recovered soon.

I wanted to pop in now that everyone's in bed and share these hooded towels I made for my mom.  She's a very proud grandma and lives on a lake, so I thought these would be great for her to have at the house for when her grandkids visit.

Fun Fact: My mom caught a lake record bass--she's rad like that

Warren's Birthday Gifts

We had a great time yesterday at the birthday party for Danielle's friend, Warren, who just turned two.  I made him a personalized crayon roll and a hooded towel.  They are coordinated, don't ask me why!

The towel didn't go over so well with the birthday boy, who thought he was going to have to take a bath.  Note to self for future gifts....

I can't wait to make my daughter a towel soon.  We still have two months of warm weather ahead of us and I have been in love with the design I plan to use since before I got my machine.  That will have to wait until I get a few other projects out of the way though.  Speaking of, I'm going to go get my sewing room finished right now while my husband is watching the kids. 

Twins' Birthday Gifts

I have twin nieces who are 9 months older than my daughter and just turned 3.  I like to sew for them and my sister usually has a lot of requests for me.  She sent me some fabric she had to use for applique.

I ended up making shirts with a zebra print she sent.  They have a peace sign outlined with hot pink.  This was a request from my sister, who is much trendier than I am.

They stitched out great and I really liked the detail of the running stitch on top of the satin stitch.


I also made some hooded towels, using the tutorial from Cole's Corner and Creations.

 They were big, super soft towels I got at Target a few weeks ago.  The tag claims they are fast drying.  I didn't run any timed tests to check this claim, but they did leave a TON of fuzz in the dryer when I pre-washed/dried them.  I really like them though (did I mention they are super soft?) and they had a really good variety of colors.

The duck is a re-sized 4x4 design from Designs by Juju, made using fabric that matches the curtain in the girls' bathroom.  The names are stitched in the Whoa Nelly font from 8 Claws and a Paw.

The towels were a really fun project and quick to sew--the embroidery took up most of the time.  I plan on making more soon, they are rather addicting.
